Jane Jaskevich
Artist Statement
My
stone sculptures are mystical in nature. Over the years I have
dealt
with several themes in stone....masked figures..figures holding
symbols..
figures with animals. Currently I am, creating floor sculptures
of dreamy
figures who turn to face you. One section of the body may be wood;
the
other part is stone The interaction of different materials is
both an inspiration and a challenge.
Female and animal forms combine to create
an ethereal quality.
Sometimes two different stones are combined to add more separation
and freedom of form as in the "Siren", a female nude
reclining on a orange
turtle.
Here the graceful configuration of the
turtle and the woman is offset by
the surreal use
of scale. In "Magic" the rabbit on the head symbolizes
a
bewitching nature. Closed eyes are used to represent the dream
world.
The motifs come from personal experience.
A womans head intertwined
with a deers face created with real antlers was my attempt
to immortalize
a dead deer which appeared to be sleeping
on the side of the road. My
images, sometimes peaceful, sometimes threatening, suggest personal
myths. The stone sculptures invite the viewer to create their
own stories.
